According to NewsWise, researchers gave two groups of rats water laden with high-fructose corn syrup, but also added omega-3 fatty acids(which protect against damage to brain cells) to one group’s diet.

The group without the omega-3 were slower when it came to running a maze that both groups had been taught to run before the experiment began.

“The second group of rats navigated the maze much faster than the rats that did not receive omega-3 fatty acids,” Gomez-Pinilla, the author of the study, said. “The…animals were slower, and their brains showed a decline in synaptic activity. Their brain cells had trouble signaling each other, disrupting the rats’ ability to think clearly and recall the route they’d learned six weeks earlier.”

Power Laces were created by amateur US scientist/inventor Blake Bevin. Bevin moved her start-up from Los Angeles to Melbourne with plans to start selling the shoe in 2013 for under $200.

“After the original Power Laces story broke on news.com.au last year I found that I’ve had a pretty large Australian following and interest in the project,” Ms Bevin told news.com.au.

More than just fashion, she’s hoping they could serve a purpose for people with disabilities.

“I can’t say much about the medical uses of the product, but the lacing mechanism is secondary to things like sensory devices and things that will help with rehab and other monitoring for other motor disabilities,” she said.

Sadly Thursday Night Hollie’s roller coaster ride came to an end. The 18 year old got the least votes from American and is out of the running to become the next American Idol. Considering there were times that it looked like Hollie would get knocked out, she persevered and delivered week in and week out with strong vocals.

Hollie got better as the competition progressed. Improving on her perceived weakness of connecting with the song and the audience. But in the end the soccer loving girl couldn’t win enough of America’s hearts.
